Is School Starting Earlier This Year? No.

Besides getting asked “Aren’t you hot in all that black?”, the most common question this time of year is “Is school starting earlier this year?” The short answer is “no.”

The conversation usually goes like this:

Person: “Hey Fr. O’Brien, how’s your summer?”
Me: “It’s been great. Lots going on at Bishop Kelley. Enrollment’s up, lots of campus improvements, and a great group of faculty and staff coming back.”
Person: “When does school start?”
Me: “The first day of school in August 12th”
Person: “WOW! It just seems to be getting earlier and earlier.”
Me: “Well actually, it’s the same time as last year and the many years before that.”
Person: “Really? It seems earlier to me.”

With that, my assistant and I embarked on a small research project to look at the first days of school over the last 15 years. Here’s the results for first days of school at Bishop Kelley High School.

1st Day of School
2015 8/12/2015
2014 8/13/2014
2013 8/14/2013
2012 8/13/2012
2011 8/12/2011
2010 8/12/2010
2009 8/12/2009
2008 8/11/2008
2007 8/13/2007
2006 8/15/2006
2005 8/12/2005
2004 8/13/2004
2003 8/18/2003
2002 8/16/2002
2001 8/20/2001

So there you have it. We’ve started later. We’ve started earlier. I know one thing: I can’t wait to have the students back on campus. It’s going to be a great year.

Fr. O’Brien

PS- It is hot wearing all black in the summer.

    Father O’Brien,

This is great! The history on dates that school started was very interesting. I’m one of those that it seems “earlier and earlier” – guess I just can’t seem to believe school is starting more than two weeks before Labor DayJ.

Have you had your knee surgery yet? Hope you have and that you are well on your way to recovery.
